Tips for Your Visit

Getting the most from your doctor visits involves taking an active role in your healthcare: preparing questions before your office visits, asking questions, taking notes, being honest with your doctor, and then making sure to follow your doctor's advice.

Here are some additional tips to keep in mind:

Before Your Doctor Visit

  • Use the Visit Checklist. The Visit Checklist is a free, downloadable form for you to use. The checklist contains important healthcare questions, along with “blank” areas for you to take notes. Plus, it includes a place to list your current medications. Fill out the checklist before your appointment, then take it with you when you visit your doctor.

  • Follow your doctor’s instructions. It’s important that you continue to follow your doctor’s advice. In particular, follow your doctor’s instructions as it relates to your treatment program, diet, exercise, and other activities.

  • Consider bringing someone with you. A friend, family member, or caregiver may help you feel even more relaxed at your next doctor’s appointment. Consider asking someone to join you at your next appointment. If they’re willing, you could even ask them to take notes for you while you talk to your doctor.

At Your Doctor's Appointment

  • Provide all the details. Once at your doctor's office, be honest about your health. Tell your doctor what medications you are taking (either over-the-counter or prescription) or if you have made changes in your lifestyle (for example, alcohol consumption, smoking, diet, exercise, etc.)

  • Take notes. Take your completed Visit Checklist with you, as well as a pen and a pad of paper. This will help you take notes about your treatment program once you’re at your appointment.
